Updates to the Planning a Trip section

Not that sheltered then!

A couple of months ago I was looking at the web stats for this website and, to my surprise, one of the most popular set of articles were about planning walking trips.

I’d originally written the four guides as a bit of an afterthought and they hadn’t particularly had the love and attention that they probably deserved. They were barely promoted anywhere and each was a different structure, and each contained information in a slightly different way.

Given their usage it was time to give them a new look and their own section in the site navigation. And, over the last few weeks, I’ve been steadily updating them.

The exact contents will vary depending on the walk, but each walk will generally get the following sections:

  • In sections or all in one go – the first thing when planning a walk is whether you’re going to break it up or do the whole thing. This section will list options for splitting the walk if you wish. Some shorter walks that can’t really be broken up will not have this section.
  • Planning an itinerary – into the meat. Itinerary options are listed here for every walk, complete with details of locations with rail stations and distance guides.
  • Finding and booking accommodation – helpful advice and information on finding places to stay will be listed here, with details of any accommodation guides or useful resources. Any hostels on the route will also be listed.
  • Getting to/from the walk – helpful information for how to get to the start and end by public transport.
  • Guide books and maps – books and maps recommended by me from my personal experience.
  • And finally, and any questions – the conclusion section also gives you a chance to ask any questions you may and benefit from my experiences on a particular trail!

As well as the new structure, there have been updates where necessary, for example when a hostel has left the YHA network or where a major change has happened.

To celebrate this new launch, today I’ve also added a brand new guide for planning a trip to walk the Pennine Way.

Naturally being for the granddaddy of all UK walking routes, it’s the biggest guide of all, and even includes a full itinerary for anyone wanting to walk the route purely in hostels and bunk barns.

I hope you find the new guides useful and informative and if you’ve any feedback, don’t hesitate to let me know.
