Wainwright in Numbers, 2018

Every year end I like to sit in front of a spreadsheet and crunch some numbers. Much more fun than going to the pub or spending time with the family. Spreadsheets are where it’s at.

The spreadsheet I like to look at most is the one with lots of stats and data about my Wainwright fell-bagging. A spreadsheet that reveals how I’m doing in my quest to visit every one of the 214 Wainwright fells.

Let’s look, shall we? And maybe compare to what happened last year as well?

Fells bagged

This is ultimately what it’s all about. The chart that shows the final tally. How many of those 214 I have been too. The Not Dones are still in a majority, but I’ve now made it to 37.4% of the Wainwrights, up from 33.2% this time last year.

Fells by year

Next up: progress over time. Always interesting to look at time. As you can see, this year I stood at the summits of nine fells. That’s not a bad number. But it’s not great. In fact, it’s right in the middle. Half the amount achieved in 2013. But nine more than zero. I’ll be blunt. I had hoped for better. But it is what it is.

But that leads to a question. What’s the average number of fells bagged per year? Now last year that figure was 8.875 per year. Has it changed now? Well yes! To 8.889 per year!

At least it’s going upwards…

On the other hand – and let’s accentuate the positives – I have fifteen more years of fell bagging ahead of me at that rate. It’ll keep me going, that’s for sure. And 2034 is not that far away…

Fells by area

I visited four fells in the Far Eastern Fells, but that’s not changed things significantly there. But 2018 also saw me traipse over five fells in the North Western range. Last year I’d visited just one of the North Western fells. Now I’ve done six! That at least makes that section look a little better!

Sadly though, my goal to visit at least one Western fell remains unmet.

Pictorial Guides Completed

And finally, one chart that hasn’t changed at all this year. Yes, it’s the number of Pictorial Guides completed. And that remains a big fat zero.

The temptation to rock up in Patterdale or Ambleside, and walk as many Eastern Fells as possible has never been stronger…

This page was updated on 24 November 2019 to change the final pie chart to a bar chart for clarity.

The pie chart doesn’t match the commentary on proportions of Wainwrights bagged. I couldn’t take the stress any longer :-) Good proportion completed though!

That’s the big problem with a pie chart with only one slice… It can make a misleading chart if you don’t give it a sensible title.

I will have to try and work out a better way of showing that one!
