Dreaming of a night in the tent

Published 24 May 2020

My tent pitched up on grassy moorland on the Southern Upland Way

In 2011 I bought a lightweight tent for walking trips. I most noticeably used it that year when I walked the Southern Upland Way. The next year it went out again when I had a long weekend in the Lake District. But then our first child arrived, and I haven’t used my camping gear since.

For the last couple of years I have told myself that yes, this will be the year! The tent will get some action again. But something always got in the year. So I started off 2020 determined to make it happen. I did a lot of thinking of what I could do. Tried to make some good plans.

Well you know what they say about best-laid plans of mice and men often going awry.

Frankly I’m now getting to the stage where I am thinking of just putting the tent up in the garden and having done with it.

Do it! Embrace the garden camp! And if you want to make it more of an adventure, don’t bother with the tent – just bivvy. If nothing else it will give the neighbours something to talk about. :)

Having reached my mid-sixties, I am not as keen as spending a night under canvas, as I once was.

I still like the idea though!
