Wear Proper Footwear

Published 9 September 2012

In 2011 I spent a couple of weeks on holiday in Canada, starting in Vancouver and then moving to the Jasper and Banff National Parks. It’s truly a stunning part of the world, and one I’d love to explore more of.

It wasn’t a walking holiday but we had our hiking boots with us and headed up hills and paths when we could.

We didn’t walk up Sulphur Mountain, at Banff. We’d been given tickets to the Gondola that went up it so it wasn’t necessary, but at the top was this sign that’s more than true for the walker.

As any mountain rescue team in Britain will tell you, wearing the wrong footwear can (and does) cause injury. Or, as in this sign, quite spectacular somersaults. And remember, good walkers don’t head to the hills wearing Ugg boots.
